Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins at St. Charles

JK/SKR students from St. Charles Catholic Elementary School have started an inquiry all about pumpkins.  It all started when their teacher, Amy Malafarina, brought in some mini pumpkins as a decoration in the class.  Students began to ask questions, so they decided to do an inquiry.  They prepared questions along with the daycare children in the school, and set out to get the answers.

Students wondered such things as: if the seeds were the same size in different pumpkins; if the inside was the same colour as the outside of a squash; if a spaghetti squash really has spaghetti inside; if the bumpy ones were bumpy inside too, and many more.  On Wednesday, October 24th, parent volunteers came and helped cut up the various sized pumpkins and squash to get to the answers.  Most of the questions were answered and students made many more discoveries than they thought and new questions were created.

St. Charles Catholic School JK/SK Students Wonder, “Where is God?”

St. Charles Kindergarten Students Prepare for a Safe and Enjoyable Summer!

Kindergarten students at St. Charles Elementary School have been “attending” Camp Wanna-Learn-A-Lot (at school) recently where they have been pitching tents, roasting marshmallows, fishing, and paddling across imaginary lakes. The students are getting a head start to the summer with literacy and numeracy activities centred on camping and learning about the outdoors. Teacher Joseph Snofl says that “creating learning activities that are relevant to the students’ interests and experiences can help parents keep their children engaged in their learning during summer vacation. Such activities can, among other things, greatly help them in their overall growth as they continue to explore the world and enhance their imaginations.”

100 Days of School Celebrated at St. Charles Elementary

Students at St. Charles Elementary Catholic school enjoyed ‘100 days of school’ on February 10th. Students were engaged in math and literacy activities to celebrate the big day. Junior Kindergarten French Immersion student, Makenna Jolette was all smiles when it was time to count to 100. This was ‘a great day for students to collaborate with students from other primary classes and participate in ‘100 day’ activities’ says Jennifer Robinson, JK/SK French Immersion teacher.
