About St. Charles School

St. Charles Catholic Elementary School is a thriving K-8 dual track French Immersion/Regular Program centre serving the Rayside-Balfour area of the City of Greater Sudbury. The school is affiliated with St. Alexander Parish, which maintains church buildings in both Azilda and Chelmsford.

It all began in 1958 when the school was first built on Charlotte Avenue. The original building had 6 classrooms, four for French language instruction and two for English. To accommodate both language sections, the classes rotated at St. Joseph School till Nov. of 1958. The French would attend half of the day and the English the other half. The school's first principal was Andre Daoust.

On June 25, 1959, the school received its official blessing by Father Seguin. It wasn't till 1962 that St. Charles became solely an English Catholic school associated with St. Alexander's Parish. By that time the had grown to four classes and 126 students. The school's first English principal was Albert Definney. As the school grew in enrollment new additions were added. In January of 1966, two more classrooms and a gymnasium were added. Over the next several years the population continued to grow (over 600) and therefore so did the school. For September of 1972 the school was converted into a very modern architectural building with 5 open concept rooms, a large dual Kindergarten room, a music room, a Family Studies room, an Industrial Arts room, a Science room, an Art room and a large open library. The large brand new addition was officially opened on Oct. 25, 1972.

In 1982, another addition to the school was completed- a gym storage room. This was followed in later years with a major renovation in which the library was closed off with walls and the open concept areas converted to four classrooms and a storage room. Industrial Arts and Family Studies have since disappeared, and contemporary studies like Computer Science have been added to the curriculum and supported by computers in classrooms throughout the school. Most recently, we are pleased to have added a Day Care - Our Children Our Future, and a Best Start Hub which is open to all families.

St. Charles Catholic Elementary - an excellent choice for your family!
